The Meatpacking District runs roughly from West 14th Streetsouth to Gansevoort Street, and from the Hudson River east to Hudson Street. When in the Meatpacking District, you will find no shortage of restaurants, bars, hotels or lounges. There are also numerous high-end fashion boutiques throughout the neighborhood’s quaint cobblestone streets and places to party late into the night. To escape the vibrant street life, you can head over to the High Line’s green space on converted railway tracks. Due to the industrial history of the neighborhood, and because it is mostly a historic district, the residential market is largely comprised of high-priced condos located in converted pre-war industrial buildings. Most of the new development in the neighborhood has been for commercial and hotel properties, rather than condos, although there are plenty of those, as well.
The Meatpacking District is another one of those NYC neighborhoods that looks nothing like it did as recently as the early 90s. This neighborhood used to be home to slaughterhouses and packaging plants, which is how it got its namesake.
