Little Island | Hudson River Park

What Is That Weird Thing Jutting Out of the Hudson River?

It’s unusual that you will find me in a car rather than a subway. Last weekend was unique because I had just broken my foot, and I was in no position to be climbing up and down stairs and being on a crowded subway car. So, I found myself in a car with my family, driving on West Street looking out the window at the Hudson River. What I saw looks like the makings of the next great Manhattan public outdoor space project. For a few brief moments, I didn’t mind sitting in the traffic that was keeping us from our destination.

Little Island

What Is Little Island?

“What is that?” my kids kept asking.  “That” is Pier 55’s “Little Island,” which is set to open in the spring of 2021 at West 13th Street in Hudson River Park. The public park will be 2.4 acres built on, depending on your mood, wine-glass or golf club or tulip shaped columns rising out of the Hudson River.

Little Island’s website says “Little Island is a new public park designed for New Yorkers of all ages to enjoy nature and art. An innovative green space featuring open lawns and gentle pathways, community spaces and performance venues.” In my mind, New York City can never have too much green space, and I’m excited to see what this one will bring. I especially love that they are creating it out of nothing, and it’s not displacing anything important (that I’m aware of).

We recently wrote an article about Central Park North and its improvements, although groundbreaking on those improvements isn’t set to begin until Little Island is set to open. With all these great developments in public outdoor space in Manhattan, I imagine more and more families will find it easier and easier to live here.
