Gowanus

Gowanus

Gowanus is sandwiched between Boerum Hill, Carroll Gardens, Park Slope and the BQE, the neighborhood is bisected by the Gowanus Canal, a heavily-polluted waterway that is undergoing remediation as a Superfund site. Although the neighborhood has been recently rezoned to promote residential development, Gownaus’s industrial past is still quite present and presents an interesting counterpoint. Now, you can find restaurants, bars, family-friendly breweries and art galleries lining the streets (and even a Whole Foods), as well as townhouses and new residential buildings.

Fun Facts

The EPA finally designated the Gowanus Canal a Superfund site in 2008, given the decades of industrial pollution and sewage contamination, and the cleanup is expected to be completed in 2022.
